Although job loss is slowing, the economy is still not producing any new jobs and UI benefits will end for one million Americans on February 28th if Congress does not take immediate action. Four million more Americans will lose the benefits in the months that follow. The impact will be devastating on families and communities, as foreclosures driven by unemployment accelerate and as small businesses lose billions in revenue from paying customers. That’s because every $1 of unemployment insurance benefits that is spent results in $1.69 in economic stimulus in the community. Something to Celebrate You may have read that New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo filed civil fraud charges Thursday against Bank of America (BofA) and two of its former top executives, including former CEO Ken Lewis. This is the first case of any significance against top executives at a major American financial institution. BanksterUSA has written quite a bit about this shady Merrill Lynch deal and the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC’s) weak-kneed response. The SEC had fined BofA for failing to notify shareholders about a massive bonus package, $3.8 billion, paid to Merrill Lynch executives when BofA acquired the bankrupt Merrill in September of 2008. But the new information revealed in Cuomo’s civil suit is that BofA allegedly lied to the U.S. government about the deal as well. “Bank of America and its officials defrauded the government and taxpayers at a very difficult and sensitive time. There was a perception that the financial system was teetering. And I believe Bank of America officials exploited this fear,” Cuomo said. The executives have denied the charges. Also last week, it was announced that the SEC had raised its fine against BofA from $33 million to $150 million after the first fine was roundly rejected by a New York federal judge as inadequate. The SEC’s legal action, which was less aggressive than Cuomo’s, did not include fraud charges and cleared individual executives of wrongdoing. The SEC’s change of heart represents a big win for BanksterUSA, as we have been a constant critic of the SEC and its poor response to this issue. This month, a federal judge will decide whether or not $150 million (for a $3.8 billion infraction) is appropriate. A Story to Keep an Eye On We have reported extensively about Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner’s strange role in the bailout of AIG which benefitted Goldman Sachs above all other banks. On a new front, Gretchen Morgensen, the New York Times’ top reporter on financial issues, had a front page story Sunday exposing the role Goldman Sachs played in the downfall of AIG (and the subsequent collapse of the global economy.) We knew that Goldman stood to gain from the housing market’s implosion as the firm had made huge trades that would pay off if the mortgage market soured.
